The government hit poor Pakistanis with yet another bombshell on Saturday, raising fuel and diesel prices to an all-time high.
This comes just one day after the government raised power tariffs to meet the IMF’s demand on Friday, exacerbating the plight of fixed-income and low-income people.
PM Imran Khan has asked the Federal Cabinet to grant Petrol Price Subsidies to help the poor. In addition, the Prime Minister has instructed that tariffs on fuel products be reduced.
The government had already increased the price of petrol by Rs10.49 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs12.44 per litre. The price of kerosene has also gone up by Rs10.95 per litre, and the price of light diesel oil (LDO) has gone up by Rs8.84 per litre.
The government raised the power cost by Rs1.39/unit on Friday after eliminating the Rs72 billion subsidies to restart the IMF programme, which had been halted. The IMF advises Pakistan to tighten its belt in order to achieve a balance between the country’s income and expenditure.
