A US resident has taken down the first Markhor of the year as trophy hunting season continues in the country’s northernmost territory. The hunting licence for the wild goat, which is classified as near endangered by the IUCN Red List, was sold for over Rs20 million.
According to local media reports citing Wild Life officials, Michael Joseph, an American citizen, was the first to shoot Markhor this year. The 9-year-old goat that was hunted stood 43 inches tall.
In exchange for assisting the lawful hunt of the four-legged mammal located in Pakistan’s Himalayas and surrounding mountainous regions, local populations are receiving increased financial rewards.
