Southwest Balochistan Province’s police have appointed their first female SHO (Station House Officer).
Sonia Khanum was appointed by Abdul Khaliq Sheikh, the top cop of the mineral rich province as an officer in-charge at the Cantt Police Station in Quetta.
Female officers performing their duties with due professionalism said by IGP Sheikh while encouraging female officers.
The initiative for the establishment of police station especially for women is a step against gender discrimination.
Balochistan established it’s first women’s police station to make law enforcement accessible to women.
The first women’s station was inaugurated by Mohsin Hassan Butt, the Inspector General (IG) of Balochistan Police . This is important since it comes approximately after three decades the first such facility was set up in Pakistan by the first Muslim woman Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Balochistan is known for poor development indicators and low literacy rate – less than 27% in women.
