Sources reported that Huawei of China plans to produce electric vehicles under its own brand and may launch some models this year, as a strategic change is being pursued by the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, battered by U.S. sanctions.
As per two people familiar with the matter, Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is in talks with state-owned Changan Automobile and other automakers to use their automobile plants to make their electric vehicles (EVs).
Huawei is also in talks with BluePark New Energy Technology of the Beijing-backed BAIC Group to produce its EVs, said one of the two and a different person with direct knowledge of the matter.
After almost two years of U.S. sanctions that have cut its access to key supply chains, the proposal heralds a potentially significant change in direction for Huawei, requiring it to sell a portion of its smartphone business to keep the brand alive.
