The DUHS- Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi has recently performed its first liver autotransplantation procedure successfully in Pakistan.
According to the officials, the liver of 28-years old patient was taken out from the body, as the patient was suffering from the cancer, so the tumor was surgically removed from the liver, all the damaged veins were reconstructed; however, the liver was re-implanted in the body again.
DUHS officials reported that after a successful procedure, the patient was got operated by this autotransplantation has now begun to recover.
Prof. Saeed Quraishy, the Vice-Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences on Saturday said that “Our team of liver transplant surgeons has enthusiastically performed one of the most complex as well as sophisticated procedures that are known as liver autotransplantation.”
Moreover, he further said that regular liver transplants are carried out despite of the COVID-19 pandemic; however so far, about 6 liver transplants have successfully took place at DUHS, adding around three more liver transplants it would be carried out in the upcoming next few days for which the work to be done is on its way.
