Government launches Rabbit Farming Program in Gilgit-Baltistan

Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on National Food Security and Research, inaugurated the Angora rabbit breeding special project in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) on Thursday in order to boost wool products.

According to the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (Parc), the wool of one Angora rabbit can create up to six high-quality shawls every year.

Angora rabbits are being imported from Nepal, according to Parc Chairman Dr Muhammad Azeem Khan, who briefed on the newly inaugurated project. Initially, a set of 10 angora rabbits were transported to the Juglot station of G-B.

“A single rabbit’s fur/wool can produce 4 to 6 high-quality, valuable shawls every year for farmers. As a result, Angora is a low-cost startup. Rabit farming may be very successful in the wool business because it is the most well-known wool/fur breed; moreover, leftover feed mixed with rabbit dung may be used to make vermin compost, which is an excellent biofertilizer for crops,” according to the report.

The chairman also stated that Parc was attempting to expand this project to other districts in G-B in order to improve the level of living for the general public.

PARC’s Mountain Agriculture Research Centre was built especially for G-agricultural B’s and rural development.

PARC-MARC has established an angora rabbit farming initiative in Juglot, with the goal of bringing innovative agricultural practises to the farmers of G-B and empowering local women.

During the visit, the PM’s aide also briefed reporters and local farmers on government measures to enhance G-B agriculture using contemporary techniques and reviewed prospective areas of agriculture research and development in G-B.

The PTI government formally inaugurated Prime Minister Imran Khan’s “Backyard Poultry Program” in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) in October 2019 in an attempt to reduce poverty in the province. The initiative of the prime minister was to expand to other sections of the country.
