Pakistan Railways (PKR) has recently announced a 5% increase in train fares, effective from 19th September 2023. This decision has been made due to the recent surge in petroleum prices by the caretaker government, starting from 16th September 2023.
The current petrol price in Pakistan stands at Rs. 331.38, while high-speed diesel (HSD) is being sold at Rs. 329.18. The increase in fuel prices has led Pakistan Railways to adjust the train fares. This decision is affecting all mail or express, intercity, saloons, and parcel services. However, it does not include short lead passenger and shuttle trains.
Furthermore, this is the second time Pakistan Railways has raised train fares since August 2023. On August 17, fares for all passenger trains were increased by 10%. And it has impacted the ease of travel for the common man, particularly laborers.
However, these fare adjustments are a response to the economic changes brought about by the rise in fuel prices, aiming to ensure the sustainability of Pakistan Railways’ operations while adapting to the evolving economic landscape.
