Bangladesh Gets Its First Nuclear Power Plant Worth $13 Billion Built by Russia

Rosatom has started loading nuclear fuel into the first reactor of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, marking an important step in Bangladesh’s first nuclear energy project.

The project is valued at around $13 billion and is mostly financed through a loan provided by the Russian government. About 90 percent of the total cost has been covered under this arrangement. The plant is designed to help meet the country’s growing electricity needs.

Bangladesh has been facing increasing power demand due to industrial growth and rising population. Officials believe this new plant will help reduce electricity shortages and improve overall energy supply in the country.

The Rooppur plant will have a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts once fully operational. In the early phase, it is expected to generate around 300 megawatts of electricity. Gradually, more units will be activated, and the plant is expected to reach full production by 2027.

Government and project officials say the plant will play a key role in improving energy security. It is also expected to reduce dependence on imported fuels such as oil and gas, which have become more expensive due to global market pressures.

The project is seen as a major development in Bangladesh’s energy sector and a step toward diversifying its power sources. Once fully operational, it will provide stable electricity supply and support long-term economic growth.
