The Bangladesh High Court has taken action following remarks made by former Pakistani cricketer Waqar Younis during the ICC World Cup 2023. Younis commented on Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan’s appeal against Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews’ controversial “timed out” dismissal. This dismissal was a historic moment in international cricket.
The court ruled that local authorities must explain their decision not to lodge a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to remove Younis from the roster of commentators for the World Cup. The court also granted the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ten days to respond to this ruling.
Advocate Waliur Rahman Khan filed a writ case concerning Younis’ remarks, criticizing him for comments about Shakib Al Hasan and cricket in Bangladesh.
The comments were made during the 38th game of this year’s World Cup. In the commentary box, Younis and Russell Arnold criticized Shakib’s actions, referring to them as “unsportsmanlike behavior.” The court’s decision will shed light on this issue in the cricketing world.
