The Asia Cup T20 tournament will not be held this year, according to Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ehsan Mani. The announcement was made during a meeting between PSL franchises and the cricket board on Thursday.
The Asia Cup was expected to take place in mid-June, but the Indian team has already qualified for the ICC Test Championship final against New Zealand in England in June.
Though India was willing to send a second-string squad to the tournament, Pakistan was opposed to the idea and insisted on full-strength teams participating. Mani told meeting attendees that the Asia Cup has been postponed until 2023, and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will determine the next tournament’s host.
The PCB Chairman informed the franchises that the tournament’s postponement has provided the PCB with a vacant window in June to host the remaining PSL 6 matches. The PSL 2021 was expected to begin in February, but it was halted in March after several COVID-19 cases were discovered in the bio-secure bubble.
