China Takes Up 60% of New Renewable Capacity Added Worldwide in 2023: IEA Report

The world is adopting clean energy at a faster rate than ever before, with more than 560 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity added in 2023, according to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2024 report released recently. This growth is led by China, which accounted for an impressive 60% of this increase. Notably, China’s solar power generation is set to surpass the total current electricity demand of the United States by the early 2030s.

The IEA report highlights the urgent need for a new, robust energy system that can withstand future challenges. It emphasizes that this system should focus on security, resilience, and flexibility, ensuring that the benefits of a cleaner energy economy reach all regions and communities worldwide. The report stresses that the world not only has the need but also the ability to accelerate its transition to a more sustainable and reliable energy system.
