Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced plans to introduce electric buses in all 148 tehsils of Punjab as part of efforts to improve public transportation across the province.
The initiative aims to modernize travel facilities, provide better commuting options for citizens, and reduce environmental pollution by promoting cleaner transport systems. Officials say expanding electric bus services could help improve mobility in both urban and less-developed areas.
According to the provincial government, work is already underway to strengthen public transport infrastructure. Earlier, electric buses had been approved for several additional districts, including Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Sheikhupura, among others.
Authorities believe introducing electric buses on a larger scale will provide more affordable and comfortable travel options while reducing dependence on traditional fuel-powered vehicles. The move is also expected to support efforts to improve air quality and lower carbon emissions.
The government has additionally accelerated work on metro bus stations and transport upgrades in key cities, including Faisalabad and Gujranwala. These projects are intended to strengthen mass transit networks and improve connectivity for daily commuters.
Officials say better transport systems can support economic activity by making travel easier for workers, students, and businesses. They added that investment in cleaner public transportation is becoming increasingly important as cities continue to grow.
Experts believe expanding electric transport infrastructure could encourage sustainable urban development and reduce environmental challenges over time.
The announcement reflects broader provincial plans to modernize transportation services and improve public facilities while supporting environmentally friendly solutions for future mobility across Punjab.
