National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has approved a tariff framework for importing additional electricity from Iran, marking another step toward stronger energy cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
According to reports, the approved arrangement includes the import of 104 megawatts of electricity along with an extra 100 megawatts supplied through TAVANIR. Officials say the agreement is expected to improve power availability in areas facing electricity shortages.
The updated framework builds on an energy cooperation agreement first established in 2002. New amendments include revised pricing methods, payment conditions, and improvements in electricity transmission systems to support more reliable supply.
Reports indicate that the pricing mechanism for imported electricity will remain linked to global oil prices. Based on current estimates, electricity rates are expected to stay around 12.40 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Authorities believe the increased electricity import will particularly benefit the Makran region in Balochistan, where energy shortages have affected residents and businesses for years. Improved supply may help strengthen local economic activity and reduce pressure on existing power infrastructure.
Officials say better cross-border energy cooperation could also improve long-term energy security and support regional connectivity. Reliable electricity access is considered important for industrial growth, investment, and public services.
