Driving License Fee in Punjab Increased Up to 2600%

The Punjab government has recently implemented substantial increases in driving license fees, causing concern and financial strain for motorists. The new fee structure, effective since January 17, 2023, reveals unprecedented spikes, with some categories witnessing staggering increases of up to 2600%.

This revised fee schedule presents daunting figures, creating a challenging situation for drivers aiming to renew or obtain licenses in the region. For motorcyclists, the fee has risen dramatically from a reasonable 60 rupees for a 5-year license to an exorbitant Rs. 4900, marking an alarming 791% increase.

Car and Jeep owners now face a 1100% surge, with fees jumping from Rs. 550 to Rs. 11400. Similarly, the Light Transport (LTE) and Heavy Transport (HTE) categories witness increases of 1205% and 2656%, respectively. Tractor owners also experience a substantial 2100% fee hike, rising from Rs. 450 to Rs. 9900.

Despite the government’s justification citing the need for infrastructure development and road safety initiatives, the increased fees impose a significant burden on the common man, raising questions about the impact on the daily lives of residents.
