Türkiye Says Makkah Defence Pact Could Eventually Include Iran
Türkiye’s Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus has said the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan could potentially expand in the future to include Iran and other Muslim-majority countries.
The agreement, signed in August, is based on a collective defence principle under which an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all participating countries. Kurtulmus said the pact is not directed against any particular country, including Iran, and noted that Tehran could potentially become part of the agreement in the future.
The agreement is expected to be presented to the Turkish Parliament for ratification after lawmakers return from their recess in October. Any future expansion would depend on the participating countries and their respective legal and political processes.
