Dubai Trials LocallyMade Driveless Electric Boat, Can Carry 8 Passengers

Dubai’s traditional mode of transport, the Abra, is not just a means of getting around but also a cultural heritage of the emirate. In a groundbreaking development, the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a trial operation of the first self-driving electric Abras, adding a modern twist to this traditional experience. Manufactured locally at the RTA’s Al Garhoud Marine Maintenance Centre, this Autonomous Electric Abra can carry up to eight passengers and maintains the authentic design that preserves the heritage identity of the Abras. The initial journey covered the distance between Al Jaddaf Station and the Festival City Station on the Dubai Creek.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, highlighted the significance of the Autonomous Electric Abra in Dubai’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions in public transportation and achieve its self-driving transport strategy.

The goal is to transform 25% of all mobility journeys in Dubai into self-driving journeys by 2030. This development aligns with Dubai’s master plan for sustainable and innovative transportation solutions.

The introduction of self-driving electric Abras represents an exciting step towards a greener and technologically advanced transportation system in Dubai. By combining tradition and innovation, the city is pushing boundaries to enhance the overall travel experience while promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
