Former DG ISPR Lt. Gen. Asif Ghafoor Retires After 40 Years of Service

Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor, a former Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), has retired after a remarkable military career.

Commissioned into the 87 SP Medium Regiment Artillery in 1988, General Ghafoor held several important roles throughout his service. These included Brigade Major, GSO-I, and Director of Military Operations. However, he is best known for his tenure as DG ISPR from 2016 to 2020.

During this time, General Ghafoor became a prominent figure for his candid press briefings and strong social media presence. He played a critical role during the 2019 standoff between Pakistan and India, effectively communicating Pakistan’s stance and keeping the public informed during a tense period.

In the later part of his career, General Ghafoor served as the President of the National Defence University (NDU). In this role, he focused on enhancing defense education and promoting strategic studies, helping to shape the next generation of military leaders.
