HTC has a fascinating history that is full of ups and downs. It was one of the major participants in the smartphone market when it was founded in 1997, but it hasn’t been able to keep up with the competition in recent years. Since the company’s peak in 2011, both sales and market share have plummeted.
Back in the day, HTC was a step ahead of the competition. In 2008, HTC unveiled the HTC Dream, the world’s first Android phone (T-Mobile G1 in the U.S.). It was well-received and extremely successful, selling over a million copies in its first year.
The tech giant also unveiled the first-ever Windows Mobile device. It was released in 2002 and sold in Europe and China under the name HTC Canary (in a coal mine?). HTC also unveiled the world’s first 3G-capable Windows Mobile phone. Its name was MTeoR, and it was first announced in 2006. Unfortunately, Windows Mobile didn’t fare any better than HTC.
