The Academic Council of Delhi University has revised their syllabus by removing ‘Saray jahan se acha Hindustan hamara’ written by the great Allah Iqbal. The chapter ‘Modern Indian Political Thought’ was included in the 6th year bachelor students’ Political Sciences books focusing on Iqbal’s poetry.
The decision received full support from the right-wing student body, claiming that Iqbal was a supporter of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and hence plays a role in India’s partition. The final settlement, however, will be made by the Executive Council of Delhi University.
The Iqbal’s poetry ‘Saray Jahan se acha’ is a tribute to India and is widely recognized poem. This debate reflects the complicated ties between India and Pakistan as well as the differing outlooks on historical events.
