Indian Airforce Officer Sacked for Shooting Own Helicopter after Aerial Fight With Pakistan

According to Indian media, a general court-martial has ordered Suman Roy Chowdhury’s removal from office after at least seven people, including six Indian army personnel, were killed in the deadly blunder

A group captain was fired by the Indian Air Force when he used a surface-to-air missile to bring down his own Mi-17 V5 helicopter in occupied Kashmir.

Soon after the incident occurred on the day of armed conflicts between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India, where an Indian missile struck a military helicopter of Soviet design while it was returning to Srinagar, a court of the investigation was constituted.

The ‘Identification of Friend or Foe’ (IFF) system aboard the helicopter was found to be malfunctioning, which led to a breakdown in communication. The plan that helps air defence radars distinguish between friendly and enemy planes and helicopters has been disabled.

Following a dogfight between Indian and Pakistani soldiers, the tragedy occurred. A military spokesman claims that in 2019, at the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistan Air Force jets engaged two Indian warplanes in a dogfight and shot them down.

After an aerial conflict in the Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan captured one Indian pilot. In a video of what appeared to be an interview at a Pakistani air base, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, the downed pilot, was shown praising the Pakistan Army’s professionalism but denying revealing any secret information.

The second IAF fighter plane, a Sukhoi Su-30 downed by Sqn Leader Hassan Siddiqui, fell on the Indian side of the Line of Control while his MiG 21 Bison, shot down by Wing Commander Nauman Ali Khan, crashed on the Pakistani side.
