Karakoram Highway Closed Near Kohistan-Gilgit After Massive Landslide

The recent heavy rainfall in the region has caused significant disruption to normal life and infrastructure, particularly impacting the Karakoram Highway, a vital artery connecting Gilgit and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Landslides triggered by the torrential downpours have rendered parts of the highway impassable, with the Kohistan-Gilgit stretch particularly affected.

The landslides, notably near the Doga bridge, have resulted in blockages that are impeding travel and trade between Gilgit and KP. Efforts to clear the highway are underway, but progress is slow due to the challenging conditions posed by the aftermath of the landslides. The National Highway Authority has issued warnings about landslide risks along various sections of the highway, advising against travel.

In response to the situation, the KP tourism authority has advised tourists to seek alternative routes. They have assured travelers that once weather conditions improve, concerted efforts will be made to expedite the road clearance process. This proactive approach aims to minimize disruption to tourism and ensure the safety of travelers.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation and pledge to provide updates as the clearance operations progress. This transparency is crucial for keeping the public informed and for managing expectations regarding the timeline for restoring normal traffic flow on the Karakoram Highway.

The landslides serve as a reminder of the vulnerability of infrastructure to extreme weather events and highlight the importance of robust disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. As climate change continues to exacerbate such events, proactive measures will be essential for mitigating their impact on communities and infrastructure in the future.
