Lahore to Build It’s Biggest Rainwater Storage Tank in Tajpura

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has announced plans to start its largest underground rainwater storage tank project in Tajpura. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 903.725 million and aims to address longstanding issues of urban flooding and water accumulation in the area.

According to WASA’s Managing Director, Ghafran Ahmed, Tajpura has been a problem area for years, especially during the monsoon season. Due to inadequate drainage systems and natural low-lying areas, rainwater often accumulates, causing flooding and significant inconvenience to residents.

To tackle this issue, various alternatives were considered, including the construction of sewage pumping stations and roadside drains. However, these options required a higher investment and longer implementation time, making them less practical.

The proposed solution involves the construction of two underground tanks, which will collect and store excess rainwater during heavy rains. This project is expected to be completed by June 2026. Initially, the cost of the project was estimated to exceed one billion rupees. However, through revisions and careful planning, the cost was reduced by Rs. 256.745 million, resulting in significant savings for the national exchequer.

This initiative represents a major step towards improving urban infrastructure and addressing flooding challenges in Tajpura.
