Electricity consumers across Pakistan could face another increase in their power bills as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) considers a proposed hike of Rs1.34 per unit under the quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism.
If approved, the increase would remain applicable for a period of three months and could add further pressure to household and business electricity expenses.
NEPRA has reserved its decision on the adjustment request submitted by power distribution companies and is expected to announce its final decision after completing the review process.
The proposed adjustment is part of the regular quarterly mechanism through which electricity tariffs are revised to account for changes in various power-sector costs. Until NEPRA issues its final decision, the proposed increase should not be treated as a confirmed tariff hike.
If approved, the additional charge would apply to consumers in Karachi as well as other parts of the country, potentially placing an estimated Rs34 billion additional financial burden on electricity users.
The proposed increase comes at a time when households and businesses are already managing higher utility bills and other rising living costs.
