Man Collected Pebbles for 33 Years to Create His Dream Palace

Over 120,000 people visit the town of Hauterives in southeastern France each year to see the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, a beautiful palace made entirely from handpicked pebbles.

Initially named “The Temple of Nature,” this remarkable structure was crafted by postman Joseph Ferdinand Cheval over 33 years. He collected thousands of pebbles and used mortar and limestone to meticulously build this detailed castle, one stone at a time.
