In the third quarter of this year, Taiwan-based integrated circuit designer MediaTek Inc went beyond its American rival Qualcomm to become the world’s largest supplier of mobile chips. In Q3 2020, over 100 million mobile phones were sold with MediaTek chipsets globally.
MediaTek performed strongly in the $100-$250 price range in the smartphone chip industry, Counterpoint said, according to a study from Counterpoint Technology Market Research.
Sales growth in markets like China and India benefited the Taiwanese company.
“MediaTek’s chipsets share in Xiaomi has grown thrice as compared to the same period of the previous year. MediaTek was also able to exploit the gap on Huawei built up by the United States. TSMC-manufactured reasonable MediaTek chips and it became the foremost choice for numerous OEMs to rapidly fill the void left by the absence of Huawei. Earlier, Huawei had also bought a large number of chipsets prior to the ban.” said Dale Gai, Research Director of Ounterpoint.
In the July-September period, MediaTek managed to take a 31 percent share of the global smartphone chip market, while Qualcomm had just 29 percent.
