As the US space agency prepares to send astronauts deeper into space than ever before, NASA will offer up to $1 million to those who can come up with novel and sustainable food production solutions to feed astronauts in space.
Future explorers will have the energy to unveil the great unknown if they have the technology to prepare nutritious, tasty, and gratifying meals on long-duration space voyages.
NASA has established the ‘Deep Space Food Challenge,’ in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency, which challenges teams to develop, build, and demonstrate prototypes of food production technology that offer tangible, nutritious items—or food.
Feeding astronauts for extended periods of time while in space will necessitate novel solutions, said Jim Reuter, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate in Washington, DC.
