Nepali Summiteers make History, Climbed K2 in Winters

K2 was climbed by a team of 10 Nepalese summiteers, setting a milestone as the first team ever to climb the second-highest mountain in the winter season.

With regard to weather and geological difficulties, the 28,251-foot summit of K2 has never been reached in winter. It takes technical expertise to ascend to the top.

After Mount Everest, K2 is the second-tallest mountain range.

The top of the peak was reached on Saturday afternoon by Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, Nirmal Purja, Pun Magar, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Kilu Pemba Sherpa, DawaTenjing Sherpa, and Sona Sherpa.

Located in Gilgit Baltistan, K2 was the last of the 14 highest mountains in the country, all higher than 8,000 metres that were not climbed during the winter.

“Nepali climbers have made history again. For the first time in the history of winter climbing, Nepali climbers reached the top of Mt. K2 (The second highest mountain in the world). Congratulations to our Nepali climbers,” wrote Mira Acharya, an officer in the Tourism Department of Nepal in her Facebook post.
