The Motor Vehicle Wing of the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department has speeded up the process of issuing license plates, clearing a backlog of over 300,000 pending applications.
Issues like alleged kickbacks, influence of mafias, and disputes between contractors caused delays and hardships for vehicle owners.
The new computerized system enables the quick issuance of modern number plates with security features, including tracking chips. The Deputy Director, Saeed Memon, aims to eliminate commission mafias and middlemen, emphasizing direct communication with the office for problem resolution. The new plates feature Sindh Ajrak designs, with security measures to prevent duplication. Additionally, a joint project with the National Radio and Telecommunication is working to computerize all vehicle plates in Sindh, and an SMS service updates owners on their plate status. The previous contact system was acknowledged to cause delays and frustrations for vehicle owners.
