Pakistan is Estimated to be Among the Top Ten Water Deficient Countries in the World

According to Amb Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, a personal briefing of Member States on the 2023 UN-Water Conference was organized. Thank you for organising this meeting and for this critical and informative briefing with USG Liu and the two special envoys from Tajikistan and the Netherlands.

First of all, I would like to thank my colleague, the Tajik Ambassador, Jonibek, and the Dutch Ambassador, Yoka Brandt, for organising this meeting and this critical and informative briefing with USG Liu and the two special envoys from Tajikistan and the Netherlands.

Pakistan is estimated to be one of the ten most arid countries globally. Due to climate change and other events, we experience floods in the summer and frequent droughts in the winter. As such, we are concerned that the world continues to deviate from the implementation of SDG 6.

With its promotion of five accelerators, I believe that the SDG 6 Global Accelerator Framework can provide a suitable framework to structure the topics of dialogue around data and information, capacity development, innovation, and governance.

As highlighted in our discussion today, these dialogues need to be purposeful and action-oriented.

In particular, I would like to emphasize the importance of including water policy issues, including transboundary water cooperation, as one of the discussion points.
