Pakistan is taking a big step to modernise its roads. The government plans to bring a cashless electronic toll collection system and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to the national motorway network.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan gave these directions on June 12, 2026, during a meeting at the National Highways and Motorway Police Headquarters. He ordered the immediate inclusion of the M2 Motorway (Islamabad-Lahore) in the ITS programme.
Under the new system, drivers will use electronic tags or linked accounts to pay tolls without stopping. This free-flow system will reduce long queues, save time, and improve traffic flow. Surveillance cameras, communication networks, and security systems will work together in one digital framework. The toll system will also connect with Safe City security for better crime prevention.
The plan focuses on road safety and convenience. Authorities will upgrade service areas with uniform facilities. Motorway Police will stay present at all service points. Emergency response will improve with Rescue 1122 staff, fire brigades, equipped ambulances, and plans for air ambulances at key locations.
These reforms will make highways more efficient, secure, and traveller-friendly. Experts believe the move will reduce congestion, boost economic activity, and bring Pakistan’s transport system closer to international standards. The government aims to complete the main changes soon for the benefit of millions of daily commuters.
