Pakistan’s freelance economy is set to achieve a major milestone this year by crossing $1 billion in export earnings for the first time in the country’s history.
According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Pakistani freelancers have already earned over $950 million in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year. This represents a massive 49% increase compared to the same period last year. Experts believe the industry will comfortably cross the $1 billion mark by the end of the fiscal year.
The impressive growth is driven by the increasing number of skilled young Pakistanis working on international platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com. Popular services include software development, graphic designing, digital marketing, content writing, artificial intelligence, and virtual assistance.
Currently, nearly 3 million Pakistanis work as freelancers, making Pakistan one of the top providers of freelance talent in the world. The sector has become an important source of foreign exchange for the country and provides flexible earning opportunities to youth, especially in smaller cities and towns.
The government and various training institutes have also played a role by offering digital skills programs to boost the freelance workforce. This growing sector is expected to create more economic opportunities and help reduce unemployment among educated youth in Pakistan.
