PIA Plans to Expand Fleet to 60 Aircraft, Arif Habib

Pakistan has moved a step closer to modernising its national airline as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held a meeting with Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson in Washington to discuss the future expansion of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

During the meeting, both sides explored plans for the acquisition of 16 new aircraft as part of PIA’s long-term fleet renewal programme. Officials reviewed various aircraft options to determine the models best suited to the airline’s operational and commercial needs, while expressing a shared commitment to finalising the agreement at the earliest opportunity.

The proposed purchase is expected to play a key role in strengthening PIA’s operations by replacing aging aircraft, increasing route capacity, improving fuel efficiency, and enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers. The expansion is also intended to support the airline’s efforts to improve reliability and competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.

According to officials, PIA aims to gradually rebuild and expand its fleet over the coming years as part of broader reforms designed to restore the airline’s financial health, improve service standards, and reinforce its position as Pakistan’s national flag carrier. The discussions with Boeing reflect the government’s continued focus on revitalising the aviation sector and supporting the airline’s long-term growth strategy.
