Pakistan is preparing to officially hand over PIA to its new owners by the end of June after completing the remaining legal and administrative procedures.
According to Privatization Adviser Muhammad Ali, most of the major issues linked to the airline’s privatization process have now been resolved. The national carrier was sold in December 2025, with a consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation acquiring a 75% share in the airline. Fauji Fertilizer Company later became part of the group.
The privatization agreement includes investment commitments aimed at improving PIA’s operations, reducing financial pressure, and modernizing the airline’s services. Officials believe the transfer to private ownership will help improve efficiency and strengthen the airline’s future performance.
The government has also completed several important steps, including regulatory approvals, tax-related matters, and necessary legal changes required for the ownership transfer. These measures were taken to ensure a smooth transition process.
PIA’s privatization is part of the government’s broader plan to reduce the burden on state-owned enterprises and increase private sector participation. Authorities are also moving forward with other privatization and concession projects in sectors such as aviation and energy.
Officials say the new ownership structure is expected to bring fresh investment, better management practices, and improved service standards. The airline’s restructuring is seen as an opportunity to address long-standing financial and operational challenges.
The final transfer of PIA marks a major development in Pakistan’s privatization efforts. The government hopes that private sector involvement will help the national carrier become more competitive and financially stable in the future.
The coming months will determine how effectively the new management implements its investment plans and improves the overall performance of the airline.
