Power Minister Awais Leghari has announced good news for Pakistani consumers. The recent spell of electricity load-shedding has finally ended after the arrival of a new LNG shipment. He made this announcement on May 1, 2026.
The minister explained that the power outages in April were not due to any system failure or incompetence. They happened because of a temporary shortage of gas. This shortage was linked to the tensions and conflict between the US and Iran, which disrupted LNG supplies in the region. Pakistan had to buy expensive LNG from the spot market to handle the crisis.
In mid-April, many areas faced long power cuts of up to seven hours. The situation was very difficult for people, especially during hot weather. However, the government took quick steps. Outages were gradually reduced. By the end of April, load-shedding came down to only 2-2.5 hours in some places and then stopped completely after the fresh LNG arrived.
Minister Leghari assured the nation that there will be no more scheduled load-shedding. He expressed confidence that the power system is ready to meet the high demand during the coming summer months. Total electricity generation now stands at around 32,000 MW.
The government hopes to avoid costly power production in the future to keep electricity bills under control.
