Punjab Governor Rejects Usman Buzdar’s Resignation

On Saturday, Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema refused Usman Buzdar’s resignation as prime minister, which reignited uncertainty over the swearing-in of newly-elected CM Hamza Shahbaz Sharif.

The development comes after the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday ordered the Speaker of the National Assembly to swear in Punjab’s Prime Minister-elect Hamza Shahbaz.

In his letter to Pervaiz Elahi, Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, the Governor stressed that Buzdar’s resignation did not meet constitutional requirements.

Cheema said Usman Buzdar addressed the Prime Minister instead of the Governor in the letter, violating Article 130 Subsection 8 of the Constitution.

Cheema explained, “The resignation was not addressed to the governor, which was unconstitutional and rejected.”
