A formula for registration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the country has reportedly been established by the Government of Pakistan. The news came from Malik Amin Aslam, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) for the Environment during an interview with a mainstream news outlet.
The SAPM declared that the entire ‘Formula’ for the registration of EVs was included in the EV policy and that it resolved all the issues relating to registration.
He announced that a special inter-ministerial committee had been created for the matter, of which he is an active member himself, and that it had finalized and approved the policy.
Both Fawad Chaudhry, Minister of Science and Technology and Hammad Azhar, Minister of Industry and Development are big supporters of the Country’s normalization of the use of EVs and are also members of the committee.
SAPM Aslam claimed that certain incentives for the imports, registration, taxes and other owner-related issues of EV users have also been formulated and prepared by the committee.
He added that the main aim of the policy is to enable the major automakers in Pakistan to produce EVs.
With the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the government is negotiating special electricity rates to reduce both the cost of output and the cost of charging EVs.
The SAPM also clarified that the government-designed incentives would collectively reduce the operating costs of EVs by 60%.
