Sweden’s Teens Allowed to Drive Without License at 30km/h Speed

Evelina Christiansen, who is 15 years old and too young to get a driver’s licence, is already driving in a slick BMW in Sweden, where minors can operate any vehicle that has been slowed down to the speed of a golf cart.

Children 15 and older are permitted to drive without a valid driver’s licence under a nearly century-old rule that was initially intended for agricultural vehicles as long as the car has been modified to have a top speed of 30 km/h (18.6 miles per hour).

These vehicles, known as “A-traktors” (Swedes frequently use the earlier abbreviation “EPA”), have grown to be so well-liked in recent years that authorities are now worried about an increase in traffic accidents.
