According to digital analytics firm App Annie, TikTok surpassed Facebook Messenger as the world’s most downloaded app in 2020.
TikTok’s rise in the app store had a significant influence on Facebook, the US-based social media behemoth with four of the top ten most downloaded apps in the world in 2020.
During the pandemic, the app became the most popular download in Europe, South America, and the United States, according to research released on Monday.
The Chinese video-sharing platform is the only app in the top five downloads that Facebook does not own.
Since the study began in 2018, this is the first time a Chinese app has dethroned Facebook as the top app. The remaining four slots in the top downloads are Facebook’s flagship app, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger.
Tiktok has also been subjected to intermittent limitations in Pakistan as a result of its users’ uploading of immoral content on the platform.
