TSMC Witnesses Chip Shortage Until 2022

On Thursday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) said it is doing whatever it can to boost productivity and relieve a global chip shortage, but that supply constraints will likely persist into next year.

The world’s largest contract chipmaker said it is expanding capacity while maintaining competitive pricing.

In an online earnings briefing, Chief Executive Officer C. C. Wei said, “We’ve purchased land and equipment, and we’ve begun work on new facilities. We are recruiting thousands of workers and expanding our capability at multiple locations.”

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger told the Washington Post on Wednesday that the chip shortage would last “a couple of years.”

TSMC’s remarks come after the company posted a 19.4% increase in first-quarter earnings, exceeding market estimates, thanks to strong chip demand and a global transition to remote working.
