University Teachers Demand Same Tax Relief from Govt as Cricketers

The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) has called on the government to bring back the 25% tax rebate for teachers and researchers. They have questioned why cricketers are given tax exemptions for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 while educators face financial cuts.

FAPUASA President Dr. Amjad Abbas Magsi criticized the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) decision in December 2024 to remove the rebate. This change has reduced teachers’ salaries and forced them to pay back tax amounts from the past three years. Despite repeated requests, the government has not taken any action.

Dr. Magsi also raised concerns about the declining quality of higher education in Pakistan. He blamed underfunding and excessive government control for making it harder for universities to function properly.

FAPUASA has warned that if the tax relief is not reinstated, they will organize nationwide protests. University teachers have already been protesting for over a month, demanding fair treatment and financial relief.
