World’s Oldest Living Land Animal, a Tortoise, Turns 191

The world’s oldest living land animal, a tortoise named Jonathan, is now 191 years old.

Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise, was estimated to be at least 50 years old when it was brought to the island of St Helena in 1882.

While its birth year is believed to be 1832, it’s considered a conservative estimate, and Jonathan might be even older.

The tortoise has surpassed the average life expectancy of its species, which is around 150 years.

Despite losing its sense of smell and experiencing cataracts that have led to near-blindness, Jonathan continues to display a keen appetite, according to its longtime veterinarian Joe Hollins.
