1.3 Billion Fake Accounts Removed Between Oct and Dec 2020: Facebook

Between October and December of last year, Facebook said it removed 1.3 billion fake accounts, adding that it had over 35,000 people working to combat misinformation on its platform.

In a blog post, the company also stated that it had removed more than 12 million pieces of content about COVID-19 and vaccines that had been flagged as false by global health experts.

During the pandemic, false claims and conspiracies about the coronavirus vaccines proliferated on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

The disclosure of misinformation data by Facebook comes ahead of a US House Committee on Energy and Commerce investigation into how technology platforms, including Facebook, are combating misinformation.
