Corrections policy

How we fix mistakes openly, and how to tell us about one.

  • We correct mistakes openly.
  • A note on the story says what was wrong and what changed.
  • Spotted a mistake? Tell us through the Contact page.

Our approach

Getting it right matters to us. When we get something wrong, we fix it and we say so, so that you can trust what you read.

How we correct a mistake

When a story gets a fact wrong, such as a name, a number, a date or a claim, we:

  • fix the story
  • add a note to it that says what was wrong and what we changed
  • aim to correct the same mistake on our social pages, if it appeared there too

We do not quietly rewrite a story to hide a mistake. If a mistake changes what a story means, we aim to make the correction easy to see.

Small fixes

When a slip in spelling, grammar or typing does not change the meaning, we may fix it without adding a note.

Updates

News develops. When we add new information to a story, we may say that it has been updated. An update is not a correction, and we aim to keep the two clearly apart.

If you are in a story

If you think a story about you or your company is wrong or unfair, tell us. We will look at what you say against our Editorial standards. We correct mistakes of fact, but we do not change a story only because someone would prefer it said something else.

Tell us about a mistake

If you spot a mistake, write to us through the Contact page. It helps if you include:

  • the story’s title or web address
  • what you believe is wrong
  • anything that shows the correct information

We aim to look into every report and to reply.
