In Swabi, a district around 83 kilometres from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s capital city of Peshawar, the department of archaeology and museums unearthed Buddhist remains.
Over 400 antiquities and stupas dating back 1800 years have been discovered, according to officials.
In Buddhism, stupas are considered holy and sacred. Italian researchers discovered a 300-year-old Buddhist temple in Pakistan in December of last year.
According to regional head archaeologist Abdul Samad Khan, the discovery in Swat originates from an archaeological site where relics of a Hindu temple were discovered last year.
“It’s an important discovery in many respects,” he added, particularly in terms of religious concord, tolerance, and multiculturalism in the Gandhara period.
