The federal government is moving forward with plans to develop a large Garments City at Port Qasim in Karachi, aiming to strengthen Pakistan’s textile sector and create new opportunities for investment and employment.
The proposed project will cover 400 acres, with 250 acres planned for development during the first phase. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry chaired a meeting to review progress and discuss the project’s development framework.
The Garments City is expected to create around 138,000 jobs and could generate approximately $2.5 billion in revenue. The initiative is also designed to attract private-sector investment and support the country’s export industry.
Exporters operating within the development are expected to receive one-window facilities, which could make it easier to manage approvals and other business requirements.
The Port Qasim Authority will provide essential infrastructure for the project, while environmentally friendly technologies are planned to be incorporated into its development.
The location could offer an additional advantage for the garments industry because of its proximity to one of Pakistan’s major ports. Better access to port facilities could support the movement of textile products to international markets.
If successfully developed, the Garments City could become an important industrial hub, supporting exports, attracting investment and creating employment while contributing to the growth of Pakistan’s textile and garments sector.
