Pakistan will add its first Chinese-designed Hangor-class submarine to the Navy fleet in 2026, marking a major step in the country’s defence modernization program.
The addition is part of a $5 billion agreement with China to deliver a total of eight advanced submarines by 2028.
According to reports, four of these submarines are being built in China, while the remaining four will be constructed in Pakistan.
This arrangement aims to boost local shipbuilding skills and strengthen Pakistan’s defence industry by allowing technology transfer and hands-on training for local engineers and technicians.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf praised China’s defence technology, describing its platforms as modern, dependable, and well-suited to Pakistan Navy’s operational needs.
He noted that the Hangor-class submarines will significantly enhance Pakistan’s underwater warfare capabilities and overall maritime security.
The agreement also reflects Pakistan’s growing strategic cooperation with China. Beyond submarines, the two countries are expanding their partnership in areas such as artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and advanced naval technologies.
This collaboration is seen as part of a broader effort to maintain stability and balance in the region.
Experts say the induction of Hangor-class submarines will strengthen Pakistan’s naval presence in the Indian Ocean and improve its ability to safeguard sea routes and national interests.
The project not only underscores the strong defence ties between Islamabad and Beijing but also highlights their shared commitment to regional peace, technology exchange, and long-term strategic partnership.
