Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are reportedly in discussions over a plan that could convert around $2 billion in Saudi loans into a defence-related deal involving JF-17 fighter jets. The talks are being seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen military and strategic ties between the two countries.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the proposal is linked to a mutual defence cooperation agreement signed by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia last year.
These discussions are taking place at a time when Pakistan is facing financial pressure and looking for ways to manage its external obligations. At the same time, Saudi Arabia is reviewing its regional security strategy and exploring new defence partnerships.
The JF-17 fighter jet is said to be a key part of the talks. The aircraft is jointly developed by Pakistan and China and is manufactured locally by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.
It is considered a cost-effective, multi-role fighter that has already been inducted into Pakistan’s air force and exported to a few other countries.
Sources suggest that if negotiations move forward, the total value of the potential deal could reach up to $4 billion. This would include not only the aircraft but also possible support, training, and related equipment.
Converting part of the existing loans into a defence agreement could reduce immediate financial pressure on Pakistan while supporting its defence industry.
So far, officials from both countries have not formally confirmed the talks. However, analysts say such an arrangement would benefit both sides by deepening defence cooperation and strengthening long-term strategic relations.
If finalized, the deal would mark an important development in Pakistan–Saudi Arabia relations, combining financial restructuring with defence collaboration in a changing regional environment.
