Rs. 25 Billion Allocated for Pakistan’s Flagship Railway Project ML-1 in New Budget

The federal government has allocated Rs. 25 billion for the Main Line 1 (ML-1) railway project in the 2026 to 2027 budget, reaffirming its commitment to one of Pakistan’s most important transport infrastructure plans.

ML-1 is the largest railway upgrade project in the country’s history. It aims to modernise the 1,872 kilometre railway track connecting Karachi with Peshawar. The project includes replacing old tracks, improving signalling systems, upgrading railway stations, and increasing train speeds for both passengers and freight services.

The railway line carries a major share of Pakistan’s rail traffic. Once completed, ML-1 is expected to reduce travel times, improve safety, and increase the capacity of the national railway network. Freight trains will also be able to transport goods more efficiently, supporting trade and lowering transportation costs.

The project is part of Pakistan’s long term infrastructure development strategy and has also been linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). However, its implementation has faced delays due to financing and planning issues.

Officials believe the latest budget allocation will help continue preparatory work and move the project forward. Experts say a modern railway system can strengthen economic growth by improving regional connectivity, encouraging investment, and creating employment opportunities.

If completed successfully, ML-1 could play a key role in transforming Pakistan Railways into a faster, safer, and more reliable transportation network for millions of people and businesses across the country.
