9000 Pakistanis with Rs. 750 Billion Bank Deposits Paid Zero Income Tax: Audit Reveals

Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Langrial has disclosed that nearly 9,000 individuals in Pakistan are maintaining bank deposits totaling around Rs. 750 billion despite not paying any income tax. The revelation came during a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance, where he raised concerns over major weaknesses in the country’s tax system and the growing issue of tax evasion.

Langrial further stated that underreporting of income remains one of the biggest challenges for the tax authority, claiming that almost 98.9% of tax filers declare incomes significantly lower than their actual earnings. To address these issues, the FBR is exploring the introduction of a faceless taxation system along with wider use of technology, data integration, and digital monitoring to improve transparency, strengthen enforcement, and increase tax compliance across the country.
