Around 900 snakes escaped from a breeding farm in southern China after severe flooding caused by Typhoon Maysak damaged the facility in Hengzhou, Guangxi. The floodwaters washed away parts of the farm, allowing hundreds of snakes to escape into nearby areas.
According to reports, the escaped reptiles included water snakes, king ratsnakes, and several venomous cobras. Because some of the snakes are dangerous, local authorities quickly issued public safety warnings and asked residents to remain alert.
Officials advised people not to approach, catch, or disturb any snakes they might see. Instead, residents were asked to immediately report snake sightings to local authorities so trained rescue teams could handle the situation safely. Authorities also encouraged people to avoid flood-affected areas unless necessary.
Special rescue teams equipped with snake-catching tools and protective equipment were sent to search for and recover the escaped reptiles. Their work is continuing as officials try to locate as many snakes as possible and reduce the risk to nearby communities.
Hospitals in the affected region have also increased their stock of anti-venom as a precaution. Health officials said the additional supplies are intended to ensure hospitals are prepared to treat any possible snakebite cases if needed.
